The Waltz – The first PORNOPERA

The idea for this movie was to convey all the unsaid. A couple come home after a night out, with a girl they’ve just met. They invite her home and the play begins… I observed this a few times already: when you’re about to have a threesome, or at least, everybody is thinking about it, but nobody actually says the words “Would you like to have a threesome with us?”. It’s all about how we look at each other, about subtle suggestions, a hand on the thigh, an atmosphere.

That’s why I chose to add classical music to this scene – a waltz and orchestra piece by Tchaikovsky. The intensity of the sex between Jasko Fide, Mickey Mod and Lina Bembe was electric. I find most porn boring, because it reduces sex to something boring. So, I wanted to show how epic and beautiful sex can be. The music makes me feel like the three characters are musical instruments themselves, and are playing each other. The music tells a story. It says all the things that actual words can’t. Their orgasmic faces, their gaze, how they move together as one. It’s like they’re dancing together.

My idea behind the script was to show that women can also enjoy anal sex a lot and I also wanted to show a few crucial steps in having good anal sex. As you know, my movies depict my own personal experiences and fantasies and, to be honest, I’m not an anal expert. So I wanted to make something that might help beginners and that might have helped 18-year-old me when I had my first, painful, anal experience.

Lexie’s character is an actress who shows her tricks to an intimidated porn actor. They used lube, a butt plug, and they went quite slowly, unlike most anal scenes we can find online. Inspired by Baudelaire and Mica Levi, Gyllenör shot an intriguing and impactful short film, in which he examines the dynamics and similarities between oysters and pussies. With the black and white footage and the close-up shots, it’s actually pretty hard to tell the difference between the two.

Everything in the world, is connected, so it doesn’t surprise me much, but the effect it has on the viewer is quite strong. The knife digs into the mollusk and caresses the lips, provoking a sense of fascination and fear at the same time.

It reminds me of Meow Meow’s hypnotizing Calamares.

I’m used to guys who are totally homophobic but say ‘girl on girl’ is ok, which already upsets me a lot, but it was so strange to hear that from a woman.

I told her all about how porn helped me take control of my sex life and feel good in my skin, but it didn’t mean anything to her. I somehow understand that she can be traumatized by mainstream porn, which often treat women like objects, but I was startled at the fact that she wouldn’t accept any initiative to change that.

‘I would never do it’

‘I would never do it’, she added. It’s totally fine that she wouldn’t perform in porn, I’m not asking all women to be porn actresses, but why judge women who do? Is she so much better than all of us that she feels she can deny her respect for people who are different from her? Why not try to understand? 1. What led you to start shooting porn?

I think sex is more than physical connection and as user and consumer I didn’t find enough material so satisfy my curiosity about sex, so I decided to create my first project with Anneke Necro called BlackMindStudios. Since then, I was very comfortable with the idea of making a step further and I began to shoot my own material, as an independent director, and I think I’m on the right path, because everything is going very well.

2. What’s your vision of porn? What do you want to achieve?

For me, porn is an expression of what we have in our minds, the animal side. So, when I listen to my mind, I’m always trying to communicate desire and passion. I don’t care if it’s a boy or a girl, they can show us how fun it is to talk about our limits and bodies, so the result is beautiful. I wish to make conventional movies with porn in it. That would be so cool.

3. What’s the worst part of shooting porn?

Do you think there is a worst part of porn? I don’t think so. It’s a very difficult job, but as any other competitive job. I don’t see bad things in porn, only obstacles to beat, goals to reach and business to be taken care of. Everything is positive, it depends on how you make it.

4. And the best?

The best thing of shooting porn is I feel free to express anything I want. I was able to break some walls and I’m more comfortable than ever with my life and the people I’m working with. I’m free and I’m doing what I want, so this is the best part.

5. Do you consider your work to be feminist?

I prefer not to be classified, because it’s not my responsibility to choose how people can see me. I try to be honest with my work and I follow my instincts to produce films, so I believe I can do a lot of things for feminism but for others movements and fights too.

6. Do you couch surf?

I do Airbnb, another great experience to live when you travel. I love to share things, so all this initiatives are perfect for me.

7. How did the idea of Sex Surfing come to you?

I like to listen to the performers and I’m trying to open the script to everyone involved in the shooting, so the idea is the product of listening to Amarna and Lily produce a film with my vision of sex. It’s all part of the process: listen, think and film.

8. How was the shoot? It looks like you all had a lot of fun.

It was really difficult to produce because the space was very small and I didn’t cut very often the scene. The connection between them was so intense that I was trying to capture all the details and at the same time don’t forget the whole idea. Shooting with Amarna and Lily was a very good experience and I think they think the same. Lots of fun and very happy with the results.

9. Why did you choose to work with Amarna and Lily?

I was living with Amarna in Los Angeles and she told me about Lily, so why not shoot with both of them? We went to the location and we spent almost the entire day there, shooting, talking and sharing some coffee, even I met Aaliyah Love in person the same day. I ended exhausted but it was worth it.

10. Favourite camera?

I’m in love with my Canon 5D M3, but I’m also running some tests with Canon C100 and I’m looking to learn how to operate a Red Scarlett. I think I need an investment soon.

11. Next projects?

I’m working in several projects, related and non-related with porn, but right now I’m pre-producing a documentary about porn and performers.

I finally watched Gaspar Noe’s latest film, Love. I heard it was pretty bad so, I admit, I began watching ready to be disappointed. But I wasn’t.

The film got polemical because it features a lot – A LOT! – of sex scenes in it, and unsimulated ones at that.

Just like in Irreversible, the film is not chronological. We get to see how the characters reached this awful situation, from intense love to destruction.

The story revolves around a young American guy, Murphy, and the “love of his life”, Electra. Of course, Murphy’s law is not going to let that go smoothly. The couple decides to be honest and enjoy sex freely. It starts the way it usually starts, they find a nice girl next door and have an awesome threesome. The many sex scenes are absolutely beautiful. Noe, who directed Enter The Void, got us hooked on his hypnotizing shots. Apparently, he wanted to make a movie about love and sex, to show not only a mechanical act just for the sake of shooting sex, but to convey emotional relationships through sex. I think he was quite successful in achieving that. Finding love can make you grow and understand a lot of things, but if it’s not handled properly, it can also take you down.

Murphy is on a little cloud, sharing a passionate relationship with the love of his life and having threesomes. Because he’s a man, he thinks he can – and should! – have everything. So he breaks the pact of honesty and fucks his neighbor again, without Electra. The girl then gets pregnant and, being pro-life, decides to keep it. Electra hates and leaves him.

I, by the way, thank Noe for this disturbing POV shot. I think he’s kind of obsessed with the whole circle of life thing.

Some people told me it was just a very hetero-normative way of depicting sex and that the film – which lasts more than two hours – was boring. It is true that it is from a guy’s perspective and it’s not really focused on showing women’s desires or any kind of sex outside the spectrum of heteronormative life, but I think that’s exactly the point. It shows how twisted men’s egos can get and how our puritanical upbringing is showing its cracks. Some men are too scared to be honest and jealousy finds its way through. Because they have to possess. They have to control. Because they’re scared to lose what supposedly makes them men. What’s a real man? Is it fucking women? Having your dick sucked and thinking you’re the king of the world? The problem is, women also have strong sexualities and they’re less and less eager to keep them down. Men feel threatened and fuck everything up. Murphy turns himself into the victim, which a lot of men do, as soon as something doesn’t go their way.

I was really able to identify with Electra’s character, because I had myself a very passionate relationship once, which was very strong but also awoke a lot of insecurities in my partner. Because I do porn, because I talk a lot about sex and I like to point my camera at men’s dicks, which often makes men suddenly very insecure about their identity. Performance. Possession. Hanging on to these gender pressures is useless now since they keep us away from really knowing ourselves and eventually building real, honest relationships. Guys, the world doesn’t revolve around your dick anymore. You are not the victim because women can now decide to live freely – the privileged ones, that is.

Love is not a power game. It’s about letting go of your ego to be able to build yourself for who you really are and being able to really be there for someone and understand whatever they feel is valid.

I think Noe managed to depict what men and women today often go through, in this time of confusing transition. It’s also a really good source of inspiration if you want to make porn deeper – emotionally, I mean…

I was about to write an article about a few fun tools to deal with a break up, because, well, I have been dealing with a tough break up myself these last few weeks. However, I realized that I have no fucking clue about what to do after a separation. So I’m just going to say what’s coming out of me in this difficult time.

Break ups, love and porn

The fact that my personal life and my professional life are somehow intertwined doesn’t really make it easier. Porn has always been a sort of catharsis for me. It helps me accept myself, identify what I want and it gives me the freedom to be who I am. However, right now, as my heart is broken, it’s hard to relate to porn and sexual desire in general. I have watched a few scenes lately, but I’m always torn between my pussy and my heart. I’m super horny because for the first time in a while, I haven’t had sex in, like, a month. On the other side, I’m a total wreck and fantasizing about hot, passionate sex reminds me of my pain.

So, what to do then?

Well, my subconscious answered that question for me. The other night, after dreaming that I was being murdered by a psychopath, I had another totally different dream. Dating

As I said, I’m not quite ready to date again, yet, but I still felt the urge to check out Tinder last night and torture myself with this depressing reflex. Looking for love, or sex… All this has made me think that maybe we’re going at it all wrong. Are we supposed to find somebody? Do we really want to fall in love? Probably a lot of people can find happiness like this, but I don’t think I belong to this group. Falling in love means falling. It means sacrificing a part of you. It means losing your mind, your clarity, your sanity. It means changing bits of yourself. Just because we’re so fucking afraid to be alone.

I’m at a point in my life when I can really choose what I want. And what I want is to meet awesome people, to choose to spend time with people who bring something positive to my life, without ever shedding pieces of myself. I think I’m finally understanding the true meaning of polyamory. Being totally free, being ok on your own and enjoying the company of all kinds of people who can make your life richer.
I feel like I fell into the trap of blind, stupid love, just because I thought I wasn’t good enough for somebody to love me and so I held on to it like a scared cat only to realize this was destroying me and keeping me from blossoming.

Detox

I’ve also stopped smoking, because I feel like breaking up is also some kind of detox. I was high on my relationship and now I need to learn how to live without it. Which also proves that the relationship wasn’t healthy to begin with. So, I might as well leave all the negative stuff behind me, and smoking is definitely one of them. I want to be healthy in my head and in my body.

Friendship

Love is not just this romantic couple-ish crap. It can be way more than this. I’m doing ok thanks to the help of my dear friends, who are always here to support me and reassure me. They show me that I can still be really happy, and even happier than before. They take me out or snuggle with me under the blanket.
It’s important to be ok by yourself, but surrounding yourself with people with good vibes is absolutely crucial to your well-being. I’m really thankful I have true friends who show me that life goes on.

Work

You’ll probably be happy to know that I’m going to dive into work from now on. I’ve already got quite a few hot projects coming up. My new movie will be out in a few days, I’ll be premiering it in Berlin on Feb. 24th, and I’ll also be shooting my first real feature film this summer so, folks, I AM BACK!
